Mammal Sanctuaries

Just 10 minutes from the hotel, the Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary is a place to visit. This sanctuary is a protected area covering 48.36 km2. It is a very special natural space where multiple marine species are sheltered, among which the Antillean Manatee (Trichechus manatus) stands out. This mammal, known as sea cow, was hunted by the Taino as food and for the mammal’s skin. They were the ones who baptized this species “manatee,” which means “with mammary glands.”

The sanctuary demonstrates the importance of conserving natural resources and preserving marine species.
